Ayurveda in Sanskrit translates to “Science of Life”. Its highly personalized and holistic approach to health revolves around right thought, right nourishment, and right living. With its ideal of prevention over cure, Ayurveda advocates the use of herbal remedies, or Rasayanas, to help us achieve good health and harmony. The Ayurveda is a legacy to be proud of, and our best chance to lead our best lives.
According to Ayurveda, the body is governed by three principle energies called the Doshas. The three Doshas are Vata, Kapha, and Pitta; they define our physical, emotional, and spiritual characteristics. Although every individual possesses all three Doshas, they are possessed in varying degrees. Usually, they have one dominant Dosha or two, and the third that is marginal.
Vata Dosha is associated with the wind element and pertains to movement and airflow in the body. Kapha Dosha is associated with the earth and water elements and pertains to body’s solidity and physical integrity. Pitta Dosha is associated with the fire element and pertains to bodily functions such as metabolism and digestion.
In Ayurveda, illness is perceived as the Doshas in imbalance – that is in excess or insufficient. They manifest differently from person to person, and ailments can range from anxiety, depression, and insomnia to digestive disorders, skin conditions, and arthritis, among several others. To restore balance, Ayurveda prescribes exercise, yoga, and meditation. Furthermore, to strengthen, heal, and revitalize the body, it also prescribes appropriate herbal remedies, depending on the person and the condition.
